How to integrate Asana and Jira

Written by John Petty | 22-Aug-2022 08:35:45

Asana has several integrations with multiple other software. This allows it to be an influential work management tool as it can connect to many other applications that you may use. Integration with Jira allows you to coordinate and track a project's progression perfectly. The overlap of these two tools is vast, so integrating both of them is essential. This integration allows teams that plan work in Asana to collaborate and work seamlessly with teams who execute work in Jira. Having them integrated means that all work can appear on both tools.

The integration between Asana and Jira is for any customer using Asana on the Premium tier or above (not free). You must also have a Jira cloud account to be able to add the integration.

To check if you have a Jira cloud account, perform the following:

  • Go to the URL that logs you into Jira.
  • If you're using Jira Cloud, your URL appears as '< organisation name>.atlassian.net'.
  • If the URL has a different structure, then you're using the Jira server and cannot use the Asana for Jira integration.

In Asana, you can integrate Jira in 2 ways. Either through the customise menu button; or via the Asana apps gallery.

To do this via the Customize menu, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to a project where you want to install the Jira integration.
  • Click on the Customize Menu in the right-hand corner.
  • Select Add apps.
  • Select Jira Cloud.
  • A full-screen installation wizard will prompt you.
  • Authorise your Jira account.
  • Jira is then installed on projects. Therefore, you can then select which projects to implement the integration.
  • The Jira integration will now be available in any of the projects it has been added to.

To integrate via the apps gallery, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Asana Apps Gallery.
  • Find the Jira Cloud for Asana integration.
  • Click Install Jira Cloud for Asana.
  • A full-screen installation wizard will prompt you.
  • You must then authorise your Jira account.
  • You can then select which projects to add the integration to.
  • Now you can go onto one of these projects and begin using Jira.

Benefits of integrating Asana and Jira:

  • Install Jira's app on Asana, and then link it to any Asana projects required.
  • Users can now create a new Jira Issue directly within Asana. Asana supports every Jira Software issue type.
  • When creating a new Jira issue or linking an existing Jira issue from Asana, the following is pushed from Asana into Jira: Task Name, Description and Attachments.
  • To optimise your workflow, you can automate the creation of Jira issues via the Asana Rules feature.
  • Asana lets you see the real-time status of the work happening in Jira. Jira can provide you with the Status, Priority, and Assignee of the Jira Issue. Thus allowing everyone to be aware and on track.

Conclusion:

Integrating Asana and Jira creates interactive, connected workflows between technical and business teams to increase real-time visibility around the product development process. This is achieved without even leaving Asana.

With Asana + Jira Cloud, you can:

  • Maximise visibility.
  • Optimise team efficiency
  • Streamline project collaboration and hand-offs.
  • Automate your processes with Rules.
